anagama kiln

Built in 2020 with design advice and assistance from Nick Schwartz of Cider Creek Collective and named Kaimanagama, rockrose.studio’s anagama kiln is a large earthen and brick structure built into a southwest facing slope with breathtaking views of the valley below. The fire and ceramics share the same, single chamber. The craft of this firing method is in understanding how to load the kiln, in imagining the path the fire will take, how the ashes and the embers may fall depending on where the pieces are placed in relation to the fire and to each other. Although there is an element of chance and chaos, there is also a honed skill, developed through experience and a conversation of elemental forces that determines the final outcome of the firing.

wood, fire & ash

Fired with between 5-8 cords of locally sourced wood from Anderson Valley’s mixed forests, we are conscious of the elements used to produce and fuel each firing. Recycling and reduction occur simultaneously, applying histories as ash to color each ceramic body. We strive to understand and educate about the impacts of such labor and resource intensive methods.
