Each firing of the kiln requires a crew to build, sustain, and nurture the elements that will transform their ceramic wares. As with every season there is a rotation of experiences, applications, and members. We occasionally invite new artists to learn anagama practices and woodfire techniques. Artists of all levels of experience are encouraged to apply and we offer an intensive in our Residency Workshops for extended opportunities at rockrose.studio.

Due to the limited and intimate nature of our homestead, please fill out the below application for consideration as a Guest Artist. Artists who have no experience in woodfiring or new to rockrose.studio must attend a preparatory workday prior to final invitation to the firing. This is intended for our assessment and your understanding of the critical tasks that must take place during a woodfire event. Please be aware that firing a kiln is labor-intensive and an endurance challenge. Artists who are not able to physically participate but would like to have their work included, can still fill out the below form for consideration. FAQs are listed below.

  • rockrose.studio is located in a country setting deep in Philo, CA. The landscape is mainly forested, with a tent platform, other areas to pitch tents, a parking space for small campers and trucks, and a limited number of beds both inside a fully furnished cabin, and under the roof of an open air ceramic studio. Details can be provided upon request.

  • We operate on a sliding scale in all aspects, where you bring to the process what you can afford, and work for the remainder. Each fee is in general a case by case basis, and every detail of this is discussed upfront and openly during your application process.

  • The time frame for participation is similar to the fee structure, that is, taken on a case by case basis. That being said, as in all things, you will get out what you put in.

  • This depends on both your fee structure and your work participation, with some general rules which will be discussed with plenty of time to plan. The opportunities to fire large scale work is available, and one could fire a large body of smaller work in general if the arrangements are made beforehand.
